William Eggleston

I'd like to introduce you to William Eggleston, a photographer from Memphis, Tennessee. Born in 1939, his photographs are the embodiment of what you think the Deep South (Southeast United States) is like.

Above are some photos he took. The middle one, taken in Memphis, is possibly his most well known photograph, as it was the photo the band 'Jimmy Eat World' used for their album 'Bleed American', which would go on to sell 1.6 million units. You may also know him for his contributions to colour photography. His photographs, as well as many other influencers ones, helped make colour photography a fine art form.

To put it bluntly, I really like this photographer. One of the main reasons is how well he uses colours in his photographs. He uses vibrant and highly distinct colours in his photographs. This, along with great lighting to contrast these colours, gives his photos a 'detailed' look that cant be easily replicated. I also like Eggleston for his unusual subject matter which can be passed off as 'normal life'. The three photos above are of some people under a bridge, a jukebox with trophy's, and a Coca Cola sign with another sign that says 'Peaches!'. It's this subject matter that is another aspect of his style of photography, as there is so much you can gather in a seemingly 'on spur of the moment' photograph. Finally, Eggleston is unwittingly great at emphasizing a subject. By putting in in the clear, on its own, and with no other obstruction, he forces the viewer to look at what is being presented at them. This not only gives the viewer more time to look at the photo, it also makes it easy to understand the photo and come up with ideas as to what it could mean on your own. Overall, Eggleston is a great photographer. Check some more photos from him in the link below if you are interested. https://www.artsy.net/artist/william-eggleston
